Having a sick pet is never something any pet owner wants to experience. It’s even worse if you think your furry friend might be struggling, but you aren’t sure! Here are eight things to look out for that could be a sign your pet is sick and needs to be taken to a vet clinic.
Change in Appetite
One of the first things you might notice with a sick pet is that they are eating or drinking less than usual. Their body might not be able to process food and water effectively due to their illness. This is a sure sign that they need to be seen by a vet.
Change in Energy or Activity Level
Pain or mobility problems caused by an illness or injury could keep your pet from being its regular, energetic self. They might not be apt to play with you or go for walks, or maybe they limp when walking or are reluctant to go up or down the stairs.
Problems Urinating or Defecating
A sign of sickness might be vomiting, diarrhea, or blood in your animal’s urine or feces. If your pet is bloated, they might also be struggling to eliminate, which could cause further issues.
Skin or Fur Issues
Your beloved animal might be scratching or licking at parts of their body, or losing hair in patches or clumps.
Unusual Odors or Discharge
A foul odor or unusual discharge is usually a sign of illness inside the body. If you see this coming from their nose, ears, eyes, mouth, or genitalia, get them seen by a vet.
Seizures
If your pet is suffering seizures, they need immediate and ongoing care, as this is usually caused by a neurological issue.
Excessive Whining, Crying, or Unusual Vocalization
Domesticated animals often use whining or crying to indicate pain when it has progressed to a high level of intolerance. This is a latent sign of illness and should be addressed immediately.
Hiding
A pet that doesn’t want to be around other beings is retreating because they know they are sick. This is a sure sign that they should be taken to a vet clinic.
Wrapping It Up
Getting your pet seen by a vet at the first sign of any of these issues is key to keeping them healthy and preventing a more serious version of whatever they might be suffering from. The sooner you bring them in, the better, even if just for your own peace of mind.
