Strange Dog Behaviors That You Need to Notice

There are times where you’d wish your dog could communicate with you. It’s especially true when they’re behaving strangely, and you want to know why they’re doing it.

If you’re worrying because you’re seeing your dog behaving irrationally, like barking excessively or humping random objects, there may be a deeper reason behind it. Even a dog with tongue out can mean there might be something wrong if not appropriately observed.

Eating Grass or Poop

If you’ve noticed that your dog eats grass from time to time, there can be many reasons behind why they do it. Many dogs instinctively eat grass occasionally, and it may not mean much.

Some dogs eat grass frequently because they enjoy the taste. This type of behavior should be discouraged because it can often lead to dogs vomiting afterward.

Your dog may also be eating grass all of a sudden because they’re not receiving proper nutrients in their diet. If you’ve seen your dog indulging in the disgusting habit of eating poop, you should know that it isn’t unusual and can even be a habit with some dogs.

Excessive Circling

Though it may be hard to believe, many strange traits that dogs display frequently could simply be habitual remnants from their ancestors. Dogs spin or chase their tail a lot when they’re happy or excited.

If you think your dog has been spinning more frequently than before or doing it all of a sudden, it may be pointing to a health issue. Excessive spinning could be a symptom of inner ear infections or brain lesions. Consult a vet immediately in such cases.

Humping

The habit of humping can be sexual or a sign of dominance that your dog is displaying. However, humping is shown by both females and males, even when they’ve been neutered.

Sometimes, when your dog is over-excited or hyper, humping can be an expression of those emotions. It may be a sign that your pet dog hasn’t been with other dogs enough and can exert dominance over other dogs when it happens.

You can discourage such behavior through strong commands and time-outs in case it gets excessive.

Dog with Its Tongue Out

In general, a dog with its tongue out could be a default behavior when it happens to rest. Many dogs have their tongues out when they’re simply relaxing or sleeping. If your dog is anticipating a treat or food, they might have their tongue out even if their mouth is closed.

You might have noticed that your dog is more prone to having its tongue out right after playtime or a walk. It could be a simple indicator that it’s exhausted and panting.

In more serious cases, your dog may have Hanging Tongue Syndrome. It could occur if your dog has dental problems or has developed an underbite or overbite. It is also natural with some breeds, so there isn’t a need to worry about it too much.

Moving or Barking in Their Sleep

Dogs are active dreamers, and these dreams can sometimes cause them to get excessively hyper during sleep. Your dog may bark occasionally or act like it’s running when asleep.

It simply means that they’re having a dream and isn’t something to concern yourself with. However, if your dog’s body is rigid and suddenly starts violently jerking, it could be a sign that it’s having a seizure.

Don’t Worry About Your Dog’s Strange Behavioral Traits

There are many unexplained strange behaviors that dogs can display over time. While usually, it isn’t an indicator of anything serious, you may still want to get your pet checked out by a vet if they suddenly start behaving erratically.

Dogs with their tongue out, tilting their head, staring into nothing, and rolling around in the grass are just some of the strange behaviors they can display over time.
